Announcement of the 2026 Asian Young Investigator for Tuberculosis Research Award Recipients

The Stop TB Partnership Korea Secretariat of the Korean National Tuberculosis Association (KNTA) has been presenting the Asian Young Investigator for Tuberculosis Research Award since 2020. The Award is operated to encourage research activities among young TB researchers in Korea and across Asia, and to support exchange and collaboration among researchers.

Following the evaluation by the Selection Committee, the final recipients of the 2026 Asian Young Investigator for Tuberculosis Research Award are announced as follows.

Domestic Recipient

Joowhan Sung | Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

"I am deeply honored to have been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Asian Young Investigator for Tuberculosis Research Award. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor David Dowdy of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Professor Emily Kendall of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who have guided and supported me throughout my journey as a TB and global health researcher. I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Professor Achilles Katamba of Makerere University, a steadfast collaborator, and to all members of the Walimu team, who have dedicated themselves to conducting research in the field in Uganda. It is a tremendous honor to receive this meaningful award. I will carry this recognition as encouragement and continue to contribute to a world where fewer people suffer from tuberculosis. “It is a great honour to receive the 2026 Asian Young Investigator for Tuberculosis Research Award. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Korean National Tuberculosis Association and the Stop TB Partnership Korea for this invaluable recognition.

I am deeply thankful to my supervisors, mentors and colleagues at the World Health Organization, and to the national TB programmes across the Asia-Pacific region, whose partnership and trust have made my work possible. This award is very much a shared achievement.

Over the past years, my work has focused on strengthening TB surveillance, generating evidence through research, and translating that evidence into action — from active case finding to social protection for people affected by TB. I remain firmly committed to advancing this agenda, supporting countries in their journey towards ending TB, and ensuring that no one affected by this disease is left behind.
