The World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Program will organize an Information Session for civil society representatives to provide an update on WHO TB guidelines development on 10 December 2021. The World Health Organization (WHO)'s 2021 Model Lists of Essential Medicines feature key updates to the TB section including the addition of moxifloxacin and rifapentine for the indication of drug susceptible TB, child friendly formulations of bedaquiline and delamanid to treat drug-resistant TB and a higher dose formulation of rifapentine for TB preventive treatment. Further updates include the addition of other TB medicines to the list as well as the removal of some TB medicines that are no longer considered essential.

In order to increase the knowledge base for normative guidance on optimal treatment modalities for drug-resistant TB, the World Health Organization is announcing a publicly accessible global individual patient data (IPD) platform for drug-resistant TB treatment (DR-TB-IPD). This will be a secure but accessible platform containing outcomes of over 10,000 drug-resistant TB patients as the starting point and expanding this with data received in response to a recent public call for data.

Treatment Action Group (TAG) released a patent landscape investigating potential patent barriers for the development and delivery of long-acting formulations for selected hepatitis C and TB medicines. The report was presented during a webinar 'Same Meds, New Patents: What Do Activists Need to Know About Long-Acting Technologies', co-hosted by TAG and the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition. A panel of treatment activists shared different countries' perspectives on how activists can fight back against restrictive patents on long-acting technologies. TB preventive therapy is highly effective in preventing TB disease and death, yet only a few people have access to it. Tiyese Jeranji reports in Spotlight on how Médecins Sans Frontières in Khayelitsha (Cape Town, South Africa) is helping TB patients and their contacts access preventive therapy in the comfort of their homes as part of a new family-centred care initiative.

The AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) announced the launch of A5362 (CLO-FAST), a clinical trial studying a three-month clofazimine- and high-dose rifapentine-containing treatment regimen for people with drug-susceptible TB.

A new study, published in The Lancet Global Health, found that the consequences of post-TB adds substantially to the disease burden caused by TB. Future policy analyses and burden estimates need to take better account of post-TB, to avoid the potential misallocation of funding, political attention, and research effort resulting from continued neglect of this issue.

A study, published in Nature Communications, identified key secretion systems used by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in pathogenesis, which makes them candidate targets for therapeutics.

A cellular study of the hepatitis C drug telaprevir showed that the antiviral blocks the function of essential proteins in bacteria, revealing opportunity to repurpose the drug to use alongside antibiotics.

Treatment with an updated fixed-dose combination of rifampicin/isoniazid/pyrazinamide may decrease the risk for insufficient exposure to rifampicin among children with TB, according to results of a prospective study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

A study published on the preprint server bioRxiv revealed that mice infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis are resistant to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This resistance is induced by expansion of T- and B-cell subsets in the lungs upon secondary viral challenge.
