The new Tuberculosis Research Funding Trends,2005-2020 report from Treatment Action Group (TAG) and the Stop TB Partnership finds that global funding for TB research totaled US$915 million in 2020 - less than half the goal of US$2 billion set forth by participating country governments at the 2018 United Nations High-Level Meeting on TB. Despite the toll TB takes around the world, TB funding has been flat since 2018, and in 2020 TB received less than 1% of the amount invested in COVID-19 R&D.

An opinion piece in The Lancet argues that undernutrition, no BCG vaccination and HIV infection may account for around 25 per cent of new TB cases in children. If we then consider that countries with the highest TB burden are among the poorest or most socially unequal, and these are the places that will probably suffer most from the COVID-19 pandemic – then this information concerning children becomes relevant.
