빌 게이츠의 방한에 대해 BMGF의 모금활동에 지나지 않는다며 못마땅한 눈으로 보는 시선도 있으나, 그는 현재 말라리아 결핵 등의 연구에 있어서 솔선수범하는 가장 큰 기부자임에는 틀림이 없습니다. 그러한 그가 한국에서 요청한 2가지 중에 결핵백신개발에 관한 협력을 들었다고 하니, 국내의 결핵관련 연구가 국제사회에 더 큰 기여를 하였으면 하는 바람입니다. 이 즈음하여 3년전 세상을 떠나신 고원중 교수님의 빈자리가 너무나도 크게 느껴져, 추모관련 기사 전문도 실었으니 함께 읽어 주시면 감사드리겠습니다

The World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Program organized a virtual consultation on the development of guidance for conducting reviews of TB programs. The draft guidance document can be accessed here

On 8 July 2022, the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the University of Oslo, hosted a webinar on the guidance, tools and support for implementation that are available to countries to fully transition to case-based, digital surveillance systems for TB. Recording of the webinar is now available in English.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated guidelines and a new operational handbook on TB care and support to improve the quality of life and better outcomes for people with TB. This includes for the first-time implementation guidance on health education, counseling and palliative care as well as on social support, treatment administration options and digital adherence technologies

The World Health Organization releases the first-ever report on the pipeline of the vaccines currently in development to prevent infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacterial pathogens. The analysis identifies sixty-one vaccine candidates in various stages of clinical development, including several in late stages of development to address diseases listed on the bacterial priority pathogens list, which WHO has prioritized for R&D. While the report describes these late-stage vaccine candidates as having high development feasibility, the report cautions that most will not be available anytime soon. The World Health Organization releases updated guidance on national strategic plan (NSP) for TB. This guidance is intended for use in developing standalone TB strategic plans, or TB interventions as part of multidisease or health sector plans. The current document is an update to the 2015 Toolkit to develop a national strategic plan for TB prevention, care and control. The document can be accessed here. The World Health Organization’s Civil Society Task Force on Tuberculosis (CSTF-TB) called for increased political commitment and accountability in preparation for the 2023 United Nations High-Level meeting on Tuberculosis, according to the joint statement from the dialogue with WHO’s Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held in June 2022.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Stop TB Partnership announced a new project that would initially be implemented in Uganda and Viet Nam, expecting to further expand decentralized, integrated, and people-centered TB care.

The Stop TB Partnership released its July 2022 newsletter, presenting the initiatives and activities carried out during the month.

A new report released by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria at the International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in Montreal, Canada, held on 29 July - 2 August 2022, unveiled key findings of the activities supported by the Global Fund’s Breaking Down Barriers initiative, a program launched in 2017 to provide intensive financial and technical support to 20 countries to address stigma and discrimination, criminalization and other human rights-related obstacles that continue to threaten progress against HIV, TB, and malaria.

An all-oral treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) recently recommended as a new standard of care by the World Health Organization was effective and safe in people living with HIV, Dr. Ilaria Motta of Médecins Sans Frontières reported at the International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in Montreal, Canada, held on 29 July - 2 August 2022. Despite rapid progress in expanding access to HIV prevention drugs, South Africa still has the world’s largest number of people living with HIV and has faltered in its efforts to protect them from TB, the latest global AIDS report from UNAIDS has found. People living with HIV in South Africa who received preventive therapy for TB fell 30% for a period of two years (March 2019-March 2021). Source: Business Day

Ghana conducted the first nation-wide drug resistance survey to investigate the level and pattern of resistance to first-line TB drugs among newly and previously treated people with TB. The survey found the proportion of patients who showed resistance to any of the TB drugs tested to be 25.2%. Source: MyjoyOnline.com

Among US individuals with chronic hepatitis B (HBV) or latent TB (LTBI), prevalence of HBV/LTBI coinfection is substantial and highlights the need of testing for HBV/LTBI coinfection to mitigate risk of drug-induced liver injury associated with TB medications in patients with HBV. TB, HIV, and hepatitis C virus (HCV) share a global presence and propensity to disproportionately affect marginalized populations. However, over recent decades, many fewer drugs have been brought to market for TB than for the others. Using case examples of drugs developed recently for TB, HIV, and HCV, a study published in PLOS ONE explored possible reasons for that.

Amidst longstanding debate on the effectiveness of the TB vaccine, bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a new study suggested that the vaccine is protective against TB in children under 5, but adolescents and adults in high-burden countries may need additional protection to maintain immunity beyond childhood.

A study, published in Science Advances , showed how the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, developed to prevent the risk of TB, can produce a ‘trained immunity response’ in infants lasting more than 14 months after the vaccine is administered.

Researchers showed in vivo efficacy of a long-acting injectable formulation of the TB drug rifabutin. Published in Nature Communications, research in animal models showed the potential of delivering the TB drug with one injection that lasts at least four months, in lieu of the current standard treatment requiring constant adherence to a daily drug regimen.

“A key point when thinking about how to reduce AIDS-related mortality is to recognise that while scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is absolutely necessary for decreasing deaths, ART alone is not sufficient to achieve mortality reduction targets,” Dr Laura Broyles from the Global Health Impact Group told the International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in Montreal, Canada, held on 29 July - 2 August 2022. The leading cause of mortality among people with advanced HIV disease are two treatable opportunistic infections: TB and cryptococcal meningitis.

The TB vaccine candidate VPM1002 showed its safety in a study with HIV- and non-HIV-exposed newborns.

The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD) published the first four Clinical Standards for Lung Health. The aim of these Clinical Standards is to guide clinicians and program managers in implementing appropriate measures for optimal person-centred care. Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains the leading cause of infectious disease worldwide, affecting approximately a quarter of the globe's population. Treatment of TB is problematic due to the emergence of drug-resistant strains; however, an expert in antibiotic resistance is leading research on new potential therapeutic treatments for the disease.
