World Food Day this year, 16 October, was commemorated in a world with increasing global food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and international conflicts. Undernutrition is one of the most significant drivers of TB, accounting for an estimated 19% of incident TB in 2020, worldwide. 'This deadly synergy between undernutrition and TB requires strong multisectoral engagement... This is key to reducing inequalities, ending TB and leaving no one behind.' (Dr Tereza Kasaeva, Director of the World Health Organization Global TB Program)

Falling ill with TB and all the disruption and stress that goes along with it can take a toll on someone’s mental health, and mental health problems can in turn make someone more vulnerable to TB. While South Africa has a large TB program, Spotlight’s

TB can be tough to detect. Diagnosis usually requires coughing up a sputum sample from the lungs, which can be unpleasant, impractical, and even hazardous. In a promising new
study
, researchers may have found another way to identify TB. Having patients spit into a cup, then loading saliva into a commercially available testing cartridge can detect the bacteria that causes TB, even though the cartridge is designed to use sputum.
