지난 70여년간 꾸준히 발행되며 결핵퇴치의 상징으로 자리매김한 크리스마스 씰의 올해 주인공이 손흥민이라니 반갑지 않을 수 없네요. 항상 외국 방문시에 영문 크리스마스 씰을 방문 선물로 전달 드리며, DMZ와 제주도를 소개하던 기억이 생생한데, 이번에는 ‘슈퍼 손’ 손흥민이 주인공이니 받으시는 분들이 더욱 더 좋아하실 것 같아 제 마음이 다 뿌듯합니다.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a new Framework for collaborative action on TB and comorbidities to address the limited uptake of collaborative activities to reduce the burden of TB and comorbidities and to support countries in enabling access to people-centered care. The Framework is designed to stimulate action, recognizing that addressing health-related risk factors and comorbidities among people with TB is essential to end the TB epidemic.

The Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals (IVB) at the World Health Organization (WHO) released a draft document for public consultation 'WHO Evidence Considerations for Vaccine Policy Development (ECVP) for Tuberculosis vaccines intended for Adults and Adolescents'. WHO welcomes comments on both the general utility of the ECVP document, and the specific guidance developed for new TB vaccine. The deadline for comments submission is 28 October 2022. The Stop TB Partnership leadership attended several high-level meetings (19-22 September 2022), held in the margins of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77), with key partners and stakeholders to discuss the 2018 UN High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on TB targets, and the urgent need for increased investment and preparations ahead of next year’s UNHLM on TB. The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated consolidated guidelines and a new operational handbook on tests for the diagnosis of TB infection. The updated policy includes for the first-time recommendations on a new class of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen-based skin tests (TBSTs) and consolidates all currently existing recommendations for the diagnosis of TB infection, including the traditional tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs).

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria had its Seventh Replenishment Conference on 19-21 September 2022 in the margins of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly. The Pledging Conference raised more than US$14.25 billion so far for the Global Fund’s work over the next three years, bringing together more than 45 countries, multilateral partners, private sector companies and civil society and community organizations. This support aims to save 20 million lives, avert 450 million new infections, and bring new hope for ending AIDS, TB and malaria. On the eve of the Replenishment Conference, the Stop TB Partnership called on governments of donor and high TB burden countries to pledge at least US$18 billion to Global Fund and triple domestic investments in TB.

On 20 September 2022, the Government of Indonesia and the World Health Organization (WHO) hosted a high-level side event: 'Progress and multisectoral action towards achieving global targets to end TB' in the margins of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly. The event brought together a distinguished line up of speakers including health ministers and other high-level government representatives, WHO leadership, heads of agencies, TB survivors, civil society and partners. A meeting of a subgroup of the World Health Organization Global Task Force on TB Impact Measurement was held in Geneva, Switzerland on 28-29 September 2022 to review draft content that has been developed for the new guidance on national TB prevalence surveys. Content related to screening and diagnostic algorithms, case definitions, diagnostic investigations, documents and data management, chest radiography and clinical management was discussed. World Food Day this year, 16 October, was commemorated in a world with increasing global food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and international conflicts. Undernutrition is one of the most significant drivers of TB, accounting for an estimated 19% of incident TB in 2020, worldwide. 'This deadly synergy between undernutrition and TB requires strong multisectoral engagement... This is key to reducing inequalities, ending TB and leaving no one behind.' The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease released Diagnostic CXR Atlas for Tuberculosis in Children Image Library . The online image library contains a collection of chest X-rays (CXRs) from children less than 15 years of age and who present with symptoms and signs of TB. It was developed to provide additional training material and support health professionals, trainers and educators to build capacity and confidence among those who interpret CXRs from children presenting to healthcare services in high TB burden countries with presumed TB.

Falling ill with TB and all the disruption and stress that goes along with it can take a toll on someone’s mental health, and mental health problems can in turn make someone more vulnerable to TB. While South Africa has a large TB program, Spotlight’s reporting reporting in recent years suggests that mental health services in the public sector are generally falling short and there is little planning or capacity to support people who have both mental illness and TB.

Although the World Health Organization recommends the use of digital adherence technologies (DATs) for TB treatment, as part of an integrated approach complementing the delivery of quality care, they also state that more studies and evaluations on the feasibility and utility of DATs in programmatic realities are needed. At the South African TB Conference in Durban (13-16 September 2022), the Sentinel Project on Pediatric Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis released a best practices document called ' Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Pregnant and Peripartum People: A Field Guide '. The guide, developed by 17 experts from around the world, is meant to support the care of pregnant and peripartum people living with drug-resistant TB and the neonates born to them, filling a crucial gap in the care of this population.

TB can be tough to detect. Diagnosis usually requires coughing up a sputum sample from the lungs, which can be unpleasant, impractical, and even hazardous. In a promising new study , researchers may have found another way to identify TB. Having patients spit into a cup, then loading saliva into a commercially available testing cartridge can detect the bacteria that causes TB, even though the cartridge is designed to use sputum.

Researchers discovered a novel antimicrobial compound, evybactin, which could selectively act against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Evybactin could be used to treat TB without causing antibiotic resistance, and the method used to discover the drug could potentially be used to discover other antibiotics.
