결핵 연구자 선생님께, 국내의 국민건강보험공단 데이터베이스를 활용한 대규모 인구기반 후향적 코호트 연구를 통해 결핵(TB) 생존자의 허혈성 심장병(IHD) 위험에 관한 연구 결과가 발표되었습니다.
Clinical Infectious Diseases에 게재된 연구결과에 따르면 결핵 생존자는 일반 인구보다 허혈성 심장질환, 심근경색 등 심혈관계 질환에 걸릴 위험이 더 높은 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 앞으로 결핵 생존자의 IHD 부담을 줄이기 위한 전략이 필요해 보입니다.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a draft document, Global framework to prepare for country introduction of new TB vaccines for adults and adolescents, aiming to guide countries and global stakeholders in preparing for the introduction of new TB vaccines and scale-up in countries. WHO invites all those interested in the Global framework to review the draft document and provide comments on both the general utility of the document and the specific guidance developed for new TB vaccines. The World Health Organization (WHO) released a special edition of its newsletter in commemoration of World TB Day, 24 March. It highlights the announcement of the expanded scope of the WHO Director-General’s Flagship Initiative on TB, and the call to action urging Member States to accelerate the rollout of new WHO-recommended shorter all-oral treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB. The TB Vaccine Advocacy Roadmap (TB Vax ARM) released a brief demonstrating how new TB vaccines can help control drug-resistant TB in an affordable way. The brief shares a collective call to decision-makers to prioritize TB vaccine research and development as a signature piece of global health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) agendas. TB vaccines remain neglected in the AMR agenda despite the World Health Organization calling for the highest priority action on TB vaccine development to prevent AMR.

The Stop TB Partnership, USAID and the Global Fund negotiated landmark deal bringing down the price of a rapid molecular test for TB (Truenat). Under the agreement, the price of the Truenat MTB and MTB Plus test will come down to US$ 7.90 per test from the current price of US$ 9.

Since strengthening TB diagnostic networks in South Africa is critical to ending TB by 2030, the USAID supported the NTP to conduct the TB diagnostic network assessment, which took place from 27 February to 10 March 2023 by the technical experts from the Stop TB Partnership, FIND, Uganda Supranational reference lab oratory, USAID and several other organizations. Findings and recommendations from the diagnostic assessment will be incorporated in the NTP strategic plan currently being finalized.

The Stop TB Partnership Board met in person during the World TB Day, in Varanasi, India, having a unique event for TB champions in India, the High-Level TB Summit “One World TB Summit”, and the Board Meeting. Recent scientific breakthroughs have led to simple, safe, effective, and faster cures for drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) that are endorsed by the World Health Organization. The Fast Track the Cure campaign brings communities around the world together to raise their voices to tell world leaders that six-month DR-TB cures must be widely adopted and available to all who need them. Sign the campaign petition demanding universal access to new, shorter, and effective six-month DR-TB treatments by 2024. The petition will be presented to world leaders at the UN High-Level Meeting on TB to be held on 22 September 2023. On the occasion of World TB Day, the Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi launched multiple initiatives to support India’s ambitious plan to end TB ahead of the global targets. This launch was part of the One World TB Summit, a high-level TB summit convened by the Government of India in collaboration with the Stop TB Partnership. The Unitaid-funded IMPAACT4TB Consortium announced that it will provide 250,000 patient courses of short course rifapentine-based preventive treatment regimens to seven countries to help prevent TB. The seven countries set to benefit from this initiative are Brazil, Haiti, India, the Maldives, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia. Source: Unitaid

In the lead up to World TB Day, Dr Tereza Kasaeva, Director and Ms Hannah Monica Dias, Cross-Cutting Lead, of the WHO's Global TB Program along with Prof Madhukar Pai, Associate Director of McGill International TB Centre and Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology & Global Health, co-authored a commentary in The Lancet on fast-tracking progress to End TB, emphasizing high-level opportunities for investment and action.

An article , published in Intellectual Property Law and Practice, showed how fair deals on medical research that ensure equitable access to life-saving medicines can be signed with pharmaceutical companies. It detailed examples of robust access clauses built into collaboration and licensing agreements the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) has signed with public and private partners, including with pharmaceutical companies.

A multidisciplinary group of TB experts from the TBnet and RESIST-TB networks have reached a consensus on key issues related to the molecular prediction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antibiotic sensitivity or resistance and its clinical implications. The consensus document provides guidance for the design of therapeutic regimens and the optimization of treatments, and is intended to help clinicians manage TB patients.

According to a study, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, a regimen of 3 months of weekly rifapentine plus isoniazid (3HP) is safe and well-tolerated in patients with latent TB infection. Investigators further assessed patients taking 3HP to explore patterns of systemic drug reaction (SDR) symptom development and factors related to SDRs, and discovered that female sex, an age from 45 to 54 years, and use of concomitant medications were significantly linked to SDRs and discontinuing treatment.

In a review published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, researchers reported on the evolution of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) treatment from the early long regimens with injectables agents (IA), followed by the shorter regimens with IA to the groundbreaking all-oral 6-9 months regimens, and proposed a framework for implementation of the shorter all-oral regimens in the United States

Researchers have discovered new ways to treat antibiotic-resistant strains of TB by exploring the phenomenon called collateral sensitivity. Typically, antibiotic resistance leads to reduced sensitivity, but in some cases becoming resistant to one antibiotic can make a pathogen more sensitive to other completely unrelated antibiotics.

Standigm, a company using artificial intelligence (AI) technology for drug discovery and development, and Institut Pasteur Korea announced they have jointly developed new lead compounds effective in treating resistant TB. They achieved encouraging results by combining their core competencies of AI platforms, infectious disease research capabilities and drug discovery technologies. Source : PRNewswire

Scientists have identified a promising way to help fight TB, focusing on a potential host-directed therapy targeting the immune system to bolster the body’s ability to control the infection, a method shown to improve cancer treatment.

Researchers have found that the body's process of removing old and damaged cell parts, is also an essential part of tackling infections that take hold within the cells, like TB. If this natural process can be harnessed with new treatments, it could present an alternative to, or improve use of antibiotics, especially where bacteria have become resistant to existing drugs.

Study has shown how B cells direct T cells to granuloma tissue in the lungs where they can activate macrophages to neutralize TB infections.

TB stands as one of the leading causes of death among young people across the world. Modeling studies suggest that in over 96% of the deadly cases involving children younger than 15 years old, the infected child did not receive treatment. Two new evidence-based algorithms for diagnosing pediatric TB could help reverse this trend. The findings appeared in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.

TB survivors have a higher risk for cardiovascular conditions, including ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction, than the general population, according to the results of a large-scale, population-based, retrospective cohort study that used the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Results of the study were published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
