WHO의 글로벌 결핵 보고서에 의하면, 지난해 결핵 사망자 수는 130만 명으로, 전년(140만 명)보다 7%가량 감소했으나, 결핵 감염자 수는 2021년 1천30만 명에서 지난해 1천60만 명으로 3%가량 증가한 것으로 나타났습니다. 또한 작년 새롭게 결핵진단을 받은 환자수는 750만 명으로 이는 2021년보다 16%, 2020년보다 28% 증가한 수치입니다. 코로나19의 대유행이 잦아들면서 결핵 진단율이 오르고 사망자 수가 감소했다는 것은 각국의 보건 체계 속에서 결핵 대응 역량이 개선됐다는 의미로 풀이됩니다, 2011년부터 2022년까지 꾸준한 감소세를 보이던 국내 결핵환자수가 코로나 19의 여파로 2023년 초부터 감소세가 둔화되고 증가양상을 보이고 있습니다. 세계각국의 대응역량은 개선되어 가는데, 국내에서는 내년 결핵 관리·예방에 편성된 예산이 370억원으로 올해 대비 24.3%나 삭감되었습니다. 결핵퇴치에 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 정부의 의지임에도 불구하고, 일관되게 시행해 오던 결핵관련 정책이 후퇴하여 심히 우려를 자아내고 있으며, 정부의 각성이 필요해 보입니다.

The World Health Organization released the 2023 Global TB report underscoring a significant worldwide recovery in the scale-up of TB diagnosis and treatment services in 2022. It shows an encouraging trend starting to reverse the detrimental effects of COVID-19 disruptions on TB services. Despite significant recovery in 2022, progress was insufficient to meet global TB targets set in 2018. Ending the TB epidemic requires translating the commitments made at the 2023 UN High-Level Meeting on TB into real action, changing the lives and livelihoods in communities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published today updated target regimen profiles for tuberculosis treatment and new target product profiles for tests for tuberculosis treatment monitoring and optimization. These documents define the most important characteristics and requirements to be considered for developing new tuberculosis (TB) treatment regimens and future tests to choose the best-suited TB treatments and monitor their effect.

The Stop TB Partnership launched its 10th edition of the Step Up for TB (SUFT) survey report summarizing the present policy landscape of 20 high-burden countries for TB. Full results of the survey can be accessed on the SUFT website.

The World Health Organization released the first policy brief on TB-associated disability presenting the current perspectives on the issue and approaches to mitigating the impact of these disabilities on health-related quality of life.

On 24 October 2023, TB Europe Coalition hosted a webinar on sharing experiences on pilot data collection for four World Health Organization (WHO) indicators for the European region to measure the level of engagement of communities and civil society organizations in the national TB responses in the region. On 26 October 2023, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced there was an 8.1% increase in TB notifications in England this year compared with the same period in 2022 (3,628 versus 3,402). Over the last two years, the 5% annual rate increase goal outlined in the joint UKHSA and NHS England TB action plan for England, 2021 to 2026 has not been achieved.

Indonesia is struggling to fight TB, with the second-highest number of cases worldwide. Sustained adequate funding would ensure the availability of essential resources, diagnostic tools, medications and healthcare services necessary to prevent, diagnose and treat TB effectively. Efforts to fight the world’s biggest infectious killer are about to get a boost, with new vaccines on the horizon. An article, published by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance elaborated on several TB vaccine candidates that are now in late-stage clinical trials, raising hopes that an affordable and effective vaccine may soon be within reach.

A study of tuberculosis (TB) patients in South Africa found that more than half receiving treatment with a bedaquiline-containing regimen had isolates with bedaquiline resistance, researchers reported in The Lancet Microbe.

Exposure to isoniazid prevention therapy during the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with increased risk for fetal demise, according to study results published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Munich, 31 October 2023 – Around 240,000 children worldwide die of tuberculosis every year. The disease is among the top ten causes of death in children under the age of five. One of the main reasons for this mortality is that tuberculosis is often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed in time, particularly in regions with limited resources. A new diagnostic tool, which an international research consortium led by LMU medical scientists Laura Olbrich and Norbert Heinrich from the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at LMU University Hospital Munich has tested as part of a large-scale study in five countries, offers significant progress in this area. The authors report on their findings in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The risk for multidrug- and rifampicin-resistant TB recurrence is low following long-term treatment with bedaquiline or delamanid, according to results of a study, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.
