Let’s make 2024 the best year so far for the TB Response

The Stop TB Partnership, Country-Level Platform Partnerships – Stories from the field of Jan 2024

The World Health Organization (WHO) is in the process of updating high-priority Target Product Profiles (TPPs) for TB screening tests. WHO is therefore seeking feedback on the draft TPPs from experts in the scientific community involved in TB care. Comments and suggestions are welcome via this link by 29 February 2024.

High numbers of children die from TB every year in part because the disease is chronically underdiagnosed, with diagnosis reliant on tools and approaches that are insufficient and ill-adapted to the needs of children. Médecins Sans Frontières released a factsheet outlining the current scenario of diagnosing TB in children and making recommendations to test developers for needed improvements. Download the factsheet here.

The World Health Organization (WHO) published a document, an update to a previously released report with an identical title, summarizing evidence gaps articulated in various WHO TB policy guidance to help steer innovation towards sustainable, desirable, acceptable, and feasible public health interventions required to end TB. Research and studies

Scientists have uncovered important clues to how human T cells combat Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Their findings were published in Nature Communications. By tracking T cell activity, researchers uncovered promising TB vaccine and drug targets.

A novel approach to studying the progression of TB from infection to disease has identified and treated people at increased risk of developing the disease that current methods of testing would not. The results of the new approach, using PET-CT imaging tools and a new blood test, are published in The Lancet Microbe.

Virologic suppression can be maintained among patients with HIV receiving integrase inhibitor-containing antiretroviral therapy in combination with short-course rifapentine-based regimens for latent TB management, according to study results published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment may increase the risk of TB reactivation or latent TB infection in patients with cancer, according to research published in The Oncologist. Routine TB screening before ICI treatment may be beneficial for cancer patients.

Researchers reported in PLOS ONE the results of a survey of national TB program staff members projecting consistent global growth in the use of shorter, all-oral drug regimens for drug-resistant TB, and emphasizing that national efforts are needed to ensure the new treatments are accessible to eligible patients
